It’s official: there are two Mulhearns in Italy. In fact, there are two Mulhearns in Terracina and to be even more exact, just yesterday there were two Mulhearns sitting on my balcony chatting and eating gelato. Now, you would think that this would have been a good opportunity for Hattie to take my computer and share her story with you, in her own words, on this blog. However, it was not to be. After leaving her alone for a good half an hour with instructions to share her au pairing adventure, I returned only to find her on Facebook. Needless to say, she failed in her task.
In fact, despite expressing concern that (in her own words) “nobody even realises that I’ve pissed off to Italy as well”, I was quite surprised that Hattie wasn’t more keen to tell the world that she is alive and well and currently staying in Terracina. So, instead I will talk a little about the day we spent together yesterday which was, although I hate to admit it, such a good break from the usual routine.
So, after getting completely and utterly lost for a good hour Hattie eventually navigated herself to the beach and the family and I. After a bit of a swim we headed back home and had lunch. Now, rather dishearteningly the children LOVED Hattie. I just thought that I was special when they refused to let go of my hand for the whole first week of being here; however I have since realised that they do this exact same thing with any new guest. (Or of course I could just use the theory that they just got us mixed up and that they actually intended to hold my hand for the entire 24 hour period…or maybe not).
After lunch it was my free time so we took a walk along the beach and eventually ended up at the beach bar with a sandwich and fries (‘mamma mia!’ I here you shout, ‘how very un-italian!’) As afternoon rolled into evening and after much playing with the children Hattie and I escaped to the upstairs apartment and watched a good old episode of Friends before going to sleep. Ahhh…it reminded me of home.
