So, what have I accomplished in my month spent at home before uni? The answer is, not a lot. Unless of course you count organizing the clothes in my wardrobe by colour as a worthwhile use of one’s time. Although, however efficient this may be, we can all agree that wardrobe reorganisation doesn’t make for a very interesting summer.
In fact, the only thing I’ve been doing to slow down my decline into unemployed slob status, is getting up early. This prevents me from vegetating in front of Jeremy Kyle whilst simultaneously stalking people’s Facebook profiles – still wearing PJs of course – at 11 o’clock in the morning. I could never be full time unemployed, I’d either be harbouring a tv addiction or be obese, although probably both.
So instead I’ve been busying myself in the kitchen with baking cookies, cooking soups for lunch, accidentally leaving the freezer door open so that everything defrosts, and generally being a damn good domestic goddess.
I’ve also been making an effort to be slightly more frugal in my cooking, in anticipation of my poor student days. A good example of how to put few ingredients to good use, in a very short amount of time is this tortilla espanola (Spanish omelette). I just sliced some leftover roast potatoes and chorizo, then fried them for a couple of minutes in quite a small frying pan. Then just whisked up four eggs, seasoned, and threw into the frying pan with the rest of the ingredients. Once the bottom was cooked, I put in under the grill to cook all the way through. Mmmmm…delicious.
I also made some chocolate chip cookies after discovering the Random Bakes of Kindness challenge, which encourages you to bake a few extra of whatever you’re making, and give them to someone you feel would appreciate a bit of baked goodness. It might be the shopkeeper of your local corner shop who’s always sporting a smile, or somebody you know is feeling lonely and could do with a little sign of kindness. I gave half of my cookies to an elderly man who my Mum cleans for and I hope he enjoyed them.
Whilst my holiday hasn’t been filled with much more than baking and watching too much TV, I know that I should revel in these last few lazy days of freedom, as in only a week I’ll be at uni, and that my friends, will certainly not be boring.
