Day six: Cala Sisine

I’ve just realised that I never finished telling you about Sardinia.

On the second to last day we took our rented car up the side of a mountain and then – going against all common sense – we drove it down a rock strewn trail for an hour and a half. The donkeys looked at us from the side of the road, bewildered – two clueless tourists battling off-road terrain in a car never designed to be driven on anything other than tarmac; the fools, they must have thought.

We eventually arrived at a clearing where we parked and started our hike down to Cala Sisine – a cove that can only be accessed on foot or by boat. The beach was beautiful; shouldered by green cliffs on one side and the cobalt blue ocean on the other. But then we noticed the looming clouds and the waves, hurling themselves towards the sand. No wonder we were the only people on the beach. After the long journey home we crawled to the town’s one and only restaurant to revive ourselves with all the food (spaghetti, steak, chips, and sadeas – ricotta filled, honey slathered pastry).

And that was that. The rest of the trip was a warm mix of Cannonau wine, rain clouds, and utter joy that the rental car would be returned unscathed – a miracle!

The sadness over coming home has been tempered slightly by the knowledge that I’m leaving for Verona in three weeks. Verona, Italy, mornings to myself to write and drink coffee. It’ll be fun, I hope.

But before then, friends, I’ll bring you recipes. I promise. Just hang on in there.
